Should we Change our Skincare for Winter?

Should we be changing our skincare routines for winter?

We’ve spoken to Dr Marcus Mehta from Harley Academy Clinic who says we should be changing our routine, and we’ve also picked out some Guinot product recommendations.

Dr Marcus explains three ways this should be changed:

Increase hydration

Use a thicker moisturiser and consider adding a hydrating serum to your routine.

Product recommendation

  • Guinot’s revitalising and restoring Hydra Summum Cream (£102). The Hydralogic complex boosts skin’s hydration mechanism, whilst Hyaluronic acid works as an anti-ageing molecule to plumps and fill dehydrated fine lines. The unique Aquasilanol hydration complex binds water to the skin whilst creating a barrier to prevent evaporation and improve water distribution, leaving skin soft, supple and more resilient.
  • Biologic Exfoliating Gel (£39.50) - the effectiveness of a peel in a gentle wash! Natural fruit acids exfoliate the skin and activate cellular regeneration while Green Tea Extract stimulates and moisturises the skin. Contains no artificial fragrances or parabens to unveil smoother, softer skin with a more refined texture for a radiant complexion.
Guinot products for winter skin

Protect from the elements

Use a lip balm and a face mask to shield your skin from harsh weather conditions.

Avoid hot showers

Prolonged hot showers can strip your skin of natural oils, leading to dryness

What are the most common skin issues in Winter and how can these be helped/prevented?

Sensitivity

Go for fragrance-free products and avoid excessive exfoliation.

Product recommendation

  • Essentiel Nutri Confort Mask (£37), an instantly nourishing mask ideal for dry skin types, enriched with Jojoba oil to restore the hydrolipidic film which helps protect the skin, whilst Evening Primrose Oil strengthens the intercellular bonds. Essential Oils including Wild Thyme, Rosemary and Lavender soothe, tone and regenerate the skin, whilst providing a relaxing scent for a full spa-like experience.

Dryness

Use a hydrating cleanser, moisturiser, and serum. Avoid harsh products that can strip the skin of natural oils.

Chapped lips

Apply a lip balm frequently and avoid licking your lips.

Product recommendation

  • Baume Confort Lèvres (£20), this lip balm includes avocado extract to protect from environmental damage and omegas 3 and 6 to reinforce the lip’s natural barrier.

What ingredients should we be using in winter and what ingredients should we avoid?

Ingredients to use:

  • Hyaluronic acid: A potent humectant that draws moisture into the skin.
  • Ceramides: Lipids that help repair the skin's barrier.
  • Vitamin E: An antioxidant that helps protect the skin from environmental damage.

Ingredients to avoid:

  • Alcohol: Drying and can irritate sensitive skin.
  • Fragrance: Can be irritating and cause allergic reactions.
  • Sulfates: Harsh surfactants that can strip the skin of natural oils.
Any tips for skincare with different skin types – e.g. How to balance combination skin, dry patches etc?
  • Combination skin: Use a gentle cleanser and a moisturiser that's lightweight for oily areas and hydrating for dry areas.
  • Dry skin: Go for rich, creamy moisturisers and avoid harsh exfoliants.
  • Oily skin: Use a water-based moisturizer and a gentle exfoliant.

Additional tips:

  • Stay hydrated: Drinking plenty of water helps keep your skin hydrated from the inside out.
  • Protect from the sun: Even in winter, the sun's rays can damage your skin. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen daily.
  • Consult a professional: If you're struggling with skin issues, consider consulting an aesthetic doctor for personalised advice.
