Tips for Wearing Hats and Fascinators

Share

As the temperature rises, we’re in the middle of wedding and derby season, and wearing a hat requires a hairstyle that looks as good in the morning as it does at the end of the day.

According to Rachel Mathews from Daniels, London, you need to consider what type of hat it is before styling the hair: “Does the hat have an Alice hair band or an elastic? If it has an Alice hair band attached to it, the hair up shouldn’t have a braid or twist on the side of the hair, because when adjusting the hat, it will adjust the hair as well. Whereas if it’s elastic and the hair is sleek, it won’t adjust the hair as much when you’re moving it.

“When wearing a hat or fascinator, you need to remember that it will flatten the hair and could potentially adjust the hair up when placing it on your head. So, it’s always better to keep the hair up simple, rather than over complicating it. Sometimes less is more” she says.

Rachel offers her tips for styling hair wearing hats or fascinators…

  • The best hairstyle for long hair is a low bun or ponytail, keep it simple.
  • The best hairstyle for short hair is to wear it down, less is more.
  • When wearing a hat or fascinator, the hairstyle should complement the hat rather than overload the look.
  • Consider the size of the hat; if it is tilted to the side, it’s better to have the hair bun or ponytail placed on the opposite side of the hat.
  • If the hat is very big, it’s better to create a low bun rather than a ponytail so the look will look more in proportion.
  • Wash hair 24 hours before styling to give a better grip to the hair and the hat.
  • The best products for hairstyles are a wax, textured/dry shampoo and hair spray. These products help give better grip for the hair.
