Starting at the Root

Hairfluencers are everywhere right now…

With hair health trending, social media is filled with the latest ‘tried and tested’ hair loss hacks. But what many don’t realise is that hair loss concerns start at the root, and so we’re afraid to say that, that concoction of avocado and coconut oil isn’t going to make your hair thicker overnight.

Hair loss can have a significant effect on someone’s life, and as hairdressers we are often right there alongside them while it is happening. Hairdressers are in quite a unique position because they are trusted by their clients. They see their clients regularly, they build relationships with them and, in many cases, they become friends. Hairdressers are often one of the first people to notice that somebody’s hair density, scalp or shedding pattern has changed. However, when faced with a client’s question of ‘what can I do about my thinning hair?’, many hairdressers feel unequipped to diagnose any concerns.

Qualified trichologist and founder of Hair Loss Clinic UK, Hayley Handy has over two decades experience in the industry, specialising in identifying the root causes of hair loss and scalp conditions. Hayley recognised the gap that needed bridging between hairdressing and trichology and wanted to help hairdressers develop their knowledge in all things scalp and hair health.

Recently, Hayley welcomed Salon Owner, Lydia Nugent-Thomas to the Hair Loss Clinic for an in-salon trichology session to help her introduce scalp services into her business. A lot of Lydia’s clients were dealing with hair loss, and being a hairdresser, she found it difficult not being able to give the best advice. From the products to use to a step-by-step trichology consultation, Hayley demonstrated exactly how to talk with clients about such a delicate issue. Even though Lydia is not looking to partake in a full trichology course, she said that implementing scalp services was, “A great solution to help me as a hairdresser, ultimately helping my clients more. It adds something new to the salon and introduces a new revenue of income for us as a salon. Both my clients and I are really excited about it.”

Hayley’s education sessions demonstrate the benefit of hairdressers having a basic knowledge on trichology, which means that they will be better equipped to monitor their clients’ hair and scalp health over time. Clients will feel more comfortable to confide in their hairdresser on this sensitive topic and hopefully, be more willing to see a trained trichologist to further help with their hair loss concerns. Due to the ever-growing demand for trichology services and knowledge, Hayley will be rolling out her trichology courses in 2027, in collaboration with Salon Concepts.
