The language used in a salon can make a big impact on the environment you create.
It is important to be mindful that people from all different walks of life may visit your salon, and certain language can be used when providing services to make the experience suitable for everyone.
ROAR Hair & Beauty’s Brian Leo McCallum discusses the importance of using positive, inclusive language to ensure that people from all backgrounds feel welcomed.
Be Our guest
We prefer to call those who visit our salons ‘guests’ rather than ‘clients.’ This makes them feel more special as it places their experience as a main priority. This shows how much we value them and makes their visit feel less transactional. Likewise, many come to the salon as a treat for themselves, and we feel using the term ‘guest’ just adds to that.
Addressing Clients
We welcome those within the LGBTQ+ community and make sure we use language that will make them feel comfortable when visiting our salons. For example, we do not assume someone’s pronouns without being told. This helps them to feel truly accepted in our salons. There is no prejudice. We are fully inclusive and welcoming to everyone.
Creating this safe and welcoming space not only benefits our guests, but everyone within the salons. Our stylists have expressed how comfortable they feel working in this environment, which empowers them to do their best work.
Keeping this clear and open conversation is a great way to ensure that all guests feel comfortable when visiting our salons. We want them to look forward to their experience with us and have the confidence to be their true selves.
