The Benefits of Trichology Knowledge

Trichologist Hayley Handy describes the benefit to hairdressers in having trichology knowledge.

A trichologist specialises in hair and scalp health. They will examine the scalp, conduct a holistic assessment and recommend treatments, including certain products or lifestyle changes. On some occasions, the client may need to be referred to a medical practitioner.  Qualified trichologist and experienced hairdresser, Hayley Handy describes the benefit of hairdressers having trichology knowledge and why they are in a strong position to help those who are experiencing hair loss.

There is a real gap that needs bridging between hairdressing and trichology. Hairdressers are expected to know an enormous amount about hair, but traditional hairdressing training understandably focuses largely on cutting, colouring, styling and the cosmetic condition of the hair. Hair and scalp health goes much deeper than that. At the same time, not every trichologist has a hairdressing background, and GPs are responsible for a huge range of medical conditions rather than specialising specifically in hair and scalp concerns.

Hairdressers are in quite a unique position because they are trusted by their clients. We often see people regularly for years, we build relationships with them and, in many cases, they become friends. We are also often one of the first people to notice that somebody’s hair density, scalp or shedding pattern has changed.

Hair loss can become a significant part of somebody’s life, and as hairdressers we are often right there alongside them while it is happening. I think having additional knowledge allows us to recognise when something goes beyond the colour and cut, support that client properly and know when they need to be referred for further investigation.

These factors demonstrate the benefit of hairdressers having knowledge of trichology, since they will be able to monitor the clients’ hair and scalp health over time, and if any changes are noticed their clients will feel comfortable to have the conversation on this sensitive topic. Additionally, they will be seen as a trustworthy person to seek advice from since this is a professional which they have been in such frequent contact with.
