Tattoo Regret

Share
A quarter (26%) of the British Public have tattoos, with one in nine (11%) having at least one visible one on their head, face, neck, forearms, wrists, or hands.

Whilst tattoos are becoming much more accepted in society and the workplace and have been around for generations, this doesn’t mean that everyone will want their ink forever. Maybe they got carried away on a summer holiday and are left with some inking they regret? Perhaps they have a piece of permanent body art that reminds them of someone they’d rather forget? Or maybe their style has changed and now no longer want the tattoo they once loved. Whatever the reason, the good news for those who aren’t loving their tattoo is that they can get them removed.

We spoke to Charlotte Lundy, Regional Nurse Trainer at sk:n Clinics to get the key facts about tattoo removal…

How does laser tattoo removal work?

Laser Tattoo Removal works by the laser being attracted to the pigment in the ink – it heats the ink up causing it to shatter into smaller particles. This activates the body’s natural immune response allowing our body’s own lymphatic system to take away the ink particles - it has no effect on the liver or circulatory system and is perfectly safe. This results in the fading of the tattoo.

How long after getting a tattoo can you begin to have it lasered?

Once the area has fully healed you can start to have it removed. However at sk:n we normally like to wait a bit to make sure you are certain about the decision.

How many sessions does it typically take?

This really varies depending on the individual. Skin type and the size and colours in a tattoo can make a difference. Also, it depends on the result you are wishing for, whether its complete removal or fading for a cover up. I would suggest booking in for a consultation at sk:n and the experienced practitioner can let you know how many sessions you need.

Does the size and colour of a tattoo affect how long it will take to remove?

Larger tattoos may require more sessions and colours can have a big impact on the number of sessions. White ink and fluorescent colours generally won’t work with tattoo laser removal as there is no pigment for the laser to be attracted to. This is why a full consultation is important to identify the goal and whether that’s achievable.

How can you get the best results from your laser tattoo removal?

Make sure you are in good health, after all we are putting pressure on your body’s natural immune system – so make sure you are eating a well-balanced diet, keeping hydrated, and getting plenty of rest! Make sure if you are having the tattoo removed on a leg for instance that you aren’t going to be on your feet all day after, as this can increase swelling. Avoiding sun exposure is key and keeping the area cool – aftercare products can be purchased from sk:n when you buy a tattoo removal package.
