This season’s Essential Looks 2022 - 02 trends speak of coming together as one global community, celebrating our differences through ties that bind; after all, if we were all the same, the world would be a boring place. These latest seasonal looks were created by Schwarzkopf Professional’s Global Ambassadors Tyler Johnston and Lesley Jennison, Global Colour Ambassador Arjan Bevers, and Global Styling Ambassador Nick Irwin.

Trend 1: COLLEGIATE

Think the 90s. Think grunge. Reinterpreted. Think modern academia. Think the rebel within. You can find the roots of collegiate within youth subculture, where niche nostalgia is a dominant theme. It isn’t just about a certain look or hairstyle; it’s about an attitude, a series of considered contradictions: a playful preppiness juxtaposed by a rebellious edge, a cynicism towards societal norms and expectations. COLLEGIATE taps into the freedom of youth.

A particular length or colour palette doesn’t necessarily define COLLEGIATE; it’s all about a feeling. An effortlessness, a rawness, a DIY edge to the hair. Haircuts and textures are dominated by a lived-in, chopped feeling with soft broken edges. Hair should feel easy, worn, uncontrived. Hair colour should feel self-made; influenced by the cool shades and tie-dyes of the 90's.

COLLEGIATE Catwalk Look Julia

The COLLEGIATE Catwalk Look has been coloured by Lesley Jennison, with cut and styling by Nick Irwin to create lived-in textures, natural nuances and a 90s-inspired raw/dipped colour effect. For Nick, “it’s about working with the natural fall of the hair...” so he can see and feel how it reacts and adjust the cutting technique to suit. Lesley describes the colour as grown-out and homemade; “mimicking the 90’s raw bleach look, with dark and darkest brown evenly uneven applied ends, creating a ‘dishevelled beauty”.

COLLEGIATE Salon Look Vikky

The COLLEGIATE Salon Look has been coloured by Arjan Bevers, with cut and styling by Tyler Johnston with long broken edges, an elongated root that melts into hand-painted vanilla tones for a more accessible version of the Catwalk Look. For Tyler, it was important that the hair didn't come across as too freshly cut, sharing that he "used the points of the scissor throughout the baseline to create a slightly broken edge... the hair has an easiness, a worn-in feeling.” When it comes to the colour, Arjan's reverse approach to the Catwalk Look showcases 'Melted Balayage', as the perfect salon service for this look; "it's super quick to apply, really effective, gives a fantastic result and the darker root helps keep it edgier and cuts down on maintenance."

Key Products

  • Fibre Clinix Tribond Shampoo and Treatment, and Hydrate and Vibrancy Boosters
  • IGORA VARIO BLOND PLUS, IGORA VIBRANCE
  • SESSION LABEL THE MOUSSE, THE THICKENER, THE FLEXIBLE

Salon Service

Trend 2: HOMECORE

Upcycling and Recycling. Repurposing and Reworking. These themes are heavily in focus when it comes to HOMECORE. A trend that celebrates the mundane and the humble. Seeing home as a refuge, a safe space. A place to cook and nurture, to spend time with family and friends, reusing and repurposing where possible.

The hair channels the overarching narratives of the wider trend; it should have an effortless, a reverence for the natural texture, which plays on contrasts of moods and texture. Overall stylistically, things should feel easy and unforced; HOMECORE is about discovering strength in simplicity. Nature knows no right angles, so lines and silhouettes should be round and buckle. Colour-wise, the tones feel connected to nature with their earthen pureness.  Beiges and chocolates, a controlled warmth to the hair dominate the palette.

HOMECORE Catwalk Look Sako

The HOMECORE Catwalk Look has been coloured by Lesley Jennison, with cut and styling by Tyler Johnson to create offset movement with a rounded shape, featuring earthen hues with natural reflexes that give dimensional depth and shadow.

For Tyler, “this look is about showcasing the hair at its very best without feeling over-done or forced...to achieve this effect, it’s essential to work with the individual’s hair, its own unique texture, and density." For the colour, Lesley uses Schwarzkopf Professional’s newly-improved multidimensional permanent hair colour, tbh – true beautiful honest: “When we think of tbh – true beautiful honest, we think of soft, understated, muted results. I wanted to show that we can still make a statement with the stunning yet dimensional effect we can create with #betbh."

HOMECORE Salon Look Madu:

The HOMECORE Catwalk Look has been coloured by Arjan Bevers, with cut and styling by Tyler Johnson to embrace free-flowing textures within naturally curly hair, enhanced with complementary tonal hues with scattered and controlled warmth.

When talking about the cut, Tyler says “Textured hair is truly amazing, and while working with it, you need to be super visual. You need to study the hair, see how it reacts to what you are doing, and tailor your technique.” For the colour, Arjan shares his passion for the multidimensional hues tbh – true beautiful honest offers: "I love the chocolates and beiges of HOMECORE; they have a real earthen quality. Utilising these new shades, I wanted to create a colour that worked with, and accentuated, the hair's natural texture. I used large scattered triangular sections to create a much more blended effect when compared to the Catwalk Look.”
