Rainbow Room Uddingston’s Artistic Director, Suzie McGill shares her advice on dealing with client dilemmas.

Suzie McGill, Artistic Director at Rainbow Room Uddingston, has encountered many client dilemmas over the years within the salon. She has given some examples and shared her advice on how to best tackle these situations to make sure you are reassuring the client if they come to you with hair issues and managing their expectations on what can be achieved.

Box dye kits are so readily available to buy and have the potential to cause a lot of problems for those who are inexperienced, since they may not make the right selection for their hair type or may not follow the correct instructions. If a client visits the salon after a box dye has gone wrong, they will most likely feel quite worried about the damage. It’s best to reassure them by giving your professional opinion on how exactly the hair has been affected and explain the steps that will need to be taken to get the desired look, including whether it may take more than one session depending on what will need to be done in order to correct the damage.

With AI becoming a frequently used tool in many people’s daily lives, you may find some clients bringing AI-generated images to use as a reference picture. If you suspect that an image may not be real, it is important to flag this right away and manage their expectations. Explain how this can be adapted to suit the client, and the parts that can be achieved as well as anything that would need to be altered. This transparency will ensure that the client knows what to expect and avoids any disappointment.

Some clients who visit the salon will be considering going blonde. When offering advice, it’s best to explain the reality of the impact that this can have on the hair. Explain the potential damage that can be caused from using bleach due to it stripping the elasticity and reducing the strength of the hair. If a client has dark hair and is undecided on whether it is the right decision for them, it is important for them to consider how the change of colour will also change the overall appearance of the hair too and could result in some breakage. Provide some alternative solutions, such as starting with adding a few highlights to lighten the hair before committing to a full head. If a client does decide to go for blonde, suggest using a bond-building treatment during the process to help the hair stay in a healthy condition.

It is important for the client to feel they have come to the right place to get help with any hair related dilemmas. Make sure you offer reassurance and professional advice for overcoming any issues. This will establish trust and help to strengthen the client relationship.
