Cut, Colour & Care with GLOWWA

When hair is thinning, fragile or losing density, more isn’t always more.

More layers, more lightener, more heat and more tension can all make vulnerable hair work harder than it needs to. Sometimes, the smartest move is to protect what is already there, then cut, colour and style it brilliantly.

This Hair Loss Awareness Month, multi-award-winning GLOWWA is putting the salon toolkit under the spotlight. The brief? Protect first. Build the appearance of density where you can. And never ask fragile hair to do more than it safely can. Here, GLOWWA’s ambassadors share the small but powerful changes that can make a real difference behind the chair.

First up: the cut. For Errol Douglas MBE, GLOWWA’s Global Brand Partner, less is often more when working with fine or thinning hair. “I avoid excessive texturising, heavy point cutting or over-layering, as these can remove valuable weight and make the hair appear even finer,” he explains. “Instead, I focus on creating the illusion of density through precision cutting. Strong one-length shapes, soft bobs and balanced silhouettes help build weight and make the hair look naturally fuller. Wispy ends can exaggerate thinness, so it’s about creating structure and movement while keeping the hair looking healthy.”

GLOWWA ambassador Jack Mead agrees: don’t layer for the sake of it. “Strong, clean shapes with carefully placed texture can create movement while maintaining the illusion of fullness,” he says. “Often, removing less hair actually makes it look thicker.”

Colour can be an incredible confidence boost, but only when the health of the hair stays at the heart of the plan. “My biggest piece of advice is to protect the hair you have,” says Jack. “For colour, I look for ways to achieve the desired result with the least amount of stress on the hair. That might mean using strategic highlights instead of a full bleach application, softer root blends or high-lift colour where appropriate.”

For GLOWWA ambassador Emily Rose Monk, great colour and healthy-looking hair are not two separate goals. “You can have a beautiful blonde, but if the hair is in really poor condition, it’s never going to look as thick or as full, and you’re not going to get the best out of that colour,” she explains. “Healthy hair always showcases colour better, so maintaining the condition of the hair is just as important as the colour service itself.”

That might mean avoiding overlapping lightener, spacing out appointments or using clever placement to create brightness and dimension without compromising vulnerable areas. Sometimes, it also means having an honest conversation about what the hair can safely manage right now. The goal is still gorgeous colour, just achieved in a way that works with the hair rather than against it.

Jack has seen what that joined-up thinking can achieve with his client Anne. Her hair had become extremely fragile, snapped easily and struggled to grow beyond a certain length. Alongside introducing GLOWWA Hair Food into her daily routine, he created a cut and colour plan built around one priority: protecting the integrity of her hair.

Instead of heavy bleaching throughout, Jack maintains Anne’s blonde with a light full-head tint and just eight carefully placed foils of lightener through the parting. A strong, blunt bob maximises the appearance of density, while a few soft internal layers add movement without sacrificing thickness. In Anne’s own words, her hair now feels “twice as thick”, as well as healthier, stronger and more resilient. It is a brilliant example of what can happen when considered salon services, homecare, nutritional support and consistency all pull in the same direction.

Then there is the everyday handling. Heat, aggressive brushing, over-blow-drying and repeated tension can all place extra stress on vulnerable hair. Tight ponytails, braids and heavy extensions may also be unsuitable, particularly when there is weakening around the hairline or traction alopecia is a concern.

“Using the wrong brush is a big one for me,” says Errol. “Some brushes marketed as detangling tools can still pull, snag and break fragile hair if they’re used too aggressively. Choose a tool suited to the client’s hair type, work carefully from the ends upwards and never force a brush through knots. The less pulling, friction and excessive heat you expose fragile hair to, the better.”

For styling, Jack favours lightweight volumising products and root-lifting techniques that create body without unnecessary tension. Less heat, less pulling, more lift. Simple.

For clients with textured or Afro hair, Errol says repeated tension and the additional weight placed on weakened hair need particular consideration. “Textured and Afro hair is beautiful but can naturally be more fragile, so early intervention is essential,” he says. “I encourage clients to minimise excessive heat, tight hairstyles and repeated tension, particularly where traction alopecia is a concern. Sew-in extensions or adding extra weight to already-weakened hair can sometimes make matters worse. The sooner you act, the better placed you are to protect the hair you have.”

Of course, the salon service is only part of the picture. For GLOWWA, the strongest approach brings together smart cutting, colour and styling with homecare, nutrition and consistent support for healthy hair from within.

GLOWWA Hair Food is the brand’s multi-award-winning daily food supplement, developed to support healthy hair growth with a blend of vitamins, minerals and amino acids. Targeted formulations are available for women, men and those navigating menopause, making it easier to find the right fit for each client’s routine.

Ready to add collagen to the mix? GLOWWA offers two easy options. GLOWWA Collagen is a clear powder that dissolves into cold drinks, from water and squash to juice and smoothies, while GLOWWA Collagen Creamer, recently named Best Collagen 2026 by Harper’s Bazaar, adds a creamy collagen boost to coffee, tea or matcha. Both contain patented bioactive collagen peptides, clinically proven to improve hair strength by 13% within 90 days, and can be taken alongside Hair Food. The choice simply comes down to how each client prefers to enjoy their collagen.

And consistency counts. “Healthy hair is a journey, not an overnight transformation,” says Errol. “With GLOWWA, I recommend committing to at least 12 weeks and documenting progress through photographs and videos. Seeing gradual changes can help clients stay motivated.”

Hairdressers do not need to have every answer. But by listening, protecting the hair wherever possible and creating a realistic plan that connects the salon service with everyday hair wellness, they can help clients feel seen, supported and excited about their hair again. Through its approved Hair Nutrition course, GLOWWA also equips hairdressers to become GLOWWA Certified Stylists, building the knowledge and confidence to bring inside-out hair health into the consultation.
