Curating Your First Photoshoot

Share

Organising your first photoshoot can be daunting at first – organising models, creating the vision boards, and selecting the right photographer to get that perfect shot.

For Sophie Fedoriw from Safy B’s Salon, she had assisted on her boss Safy’s photoshoots and quickly developed the bug for curating her own. For Sophie, her photoshoot was a chance to experiment, she knew she had to enjoy herself and show the industry her vision. Sophie began by experimenting with concepts before putting her creative vision into place.

“From there, I messaged a few models we’d used previously and got in touch with a local photographer, and it all started coming together,” said Sophie. There’s so much to think about on your first photoshoot, but Sophie had the help of Safy and Jennifer to calm her nerves. When it comes to top tips for curating your first photoshoot, Sophie recommends planning as much as you can, but she says to not put “too much pressure on yourself for everything to be perfect!” – this is part of the fun! It’s also important to have a clear mood board, so “everyone involved understands what you’re trying to create” says Sophie. She always recommends thinking about the whole image rather than just the hair, because the model, make-up, clothes, lighting and photography all make a difference.

Think you’ll need an extra hair piece, or you should take another hairspray? Sophie says to take it as “you’ll always end up wanting something you’ve left at home!” Your first photoshoot is a milestone in your career, but mostly importantly, remember to “have fun with it and create something you actually want to create” says Sophie.

For Sophie, having members from her team there was a big part of the day. “I’ve grown massively since being at Safy B’s. Being at the salon has really encouraged me to push myself, try new things and say yes to opportunities. Having such a supportive team around me has helped build my confidence and pushed me creatively!” The team at Safy B’s are a tight-knit group of stylists who all bring something different to the table, but mostly importantly, they support one another.
