My grey roots are different!

Share

Hello,

My hair is grey from the roots (about an inch) and I have had my hair coloured now for around 20 years. Now that I am grey I find that when I visit my hairdresser for a colour the grey root area always comes out a different shade from the rest.

What should my hairdresser be doing to match the colour more closely?

Thank you, Anon, UK

Hi,

It’s a fact that many hairdressers are not familiar with the total range of colours they use and how to use them. However, it may be that the colour your hairdresser is using could be a transparent colour. Transparent colours are great and look more natural, but they do not always cover white hair. I have a feeling that the colour used on your hair may have been transparent.

I suggest you ask your stylist to use a different brand of colour, one which specialises in covering white hair. Alternatively, you could ask your stylist to mix a slightly different mix of the same colour applied on your mid-lengths and ends, but use less peroxide with the mix applied on your roots and then leave this mix longer on your roots than on the rest of your hair. Sometimes that fixes this problem.

I do hope this information will help you!
